Finland Stuns Jokic and Serbia to Reach EuroBasket Quarterfinals

RIGA, Latvia — EuroBasket 2025 delivered its first true shock on Saturday when Finland knocked out Serbia and NBA superstar Nikola Jokic with a 92–86 victory in the round of 16.

Jokic poured in a game-high 33 points, but it was Elias Valtonen who delivered the knockout punch in the final two minutes. With the game in the balance, Valtonen buried a clutch three-pointer to give Finland the lead, followed it up with a putback, and then drilled another triple to silence Serbia’s comeback hopes.

“They played a great game. From the start we didn’t come ready,” Jokic said afterward, according to the Associated Press. “I just wasn’t ready from the jump.”

The defeat sent Serbia — a pre-tournament favorite — out in the round of 16 for the second consecutive EuroBasket. It also marked Finland’s first win over Serbia since 2009.

Finland’s rebounding advantage proved decisive, as they grabbed 20 offensive boards. Jokic didn’t hold back when asked about that number:

“Just unacceptable,” he said, per the AP. “We knew what they were doing, we prepared well, we watched film, still they managed to just be better and more physical than us.”

Chicago Bulls forward Lauri Markkanen led the Finns with 29 points, while Valtonen finished with 13 — nearly half of them coming in crunch time.

Finland now moves on to face the winner of Sunday’s matchup between Olympic silver medalist France and Georgia in the quarterfinals.

It was a busy day across EuroBasket, with three other nations punching quarterfinal tickets:

  • Turkey 85, Sweden 79 — Alperen Sengun powered Turkey with 24 points, 16 rebounds, and six assists. Sweden’s Ludvig Hakanson tied the game with a late three, but Cedi Osman (17 points) and Sengun closed it out.
  • Germany 85, Portugal 58 — Portugal led at halftime and stayed close into the fourth, but Germany’s defense clamped down, holding them to just seven points in the final quarter. Dennis Schroder and Franz Wagner each had 16 points despite shooting struggles, while Neemias Queta led Portugal with 18 points and 11 rebounds.
  • Lithuania 88, Latvia 79 — Arnas Velicka tallied 21 points and 12 assists to carry Lithuania past co-host Latvia in Riga.

Before Germany’s game, a moment of silence was observed for the victims of the Lisbon streetcar accident.

Finland’s Cinderella story continues Tuesday in the quarterfinals. Turkey awaits the winner of Poland vs. Bosnia-Herzegovina, Germany will face either Italy or Slovenia, and Lithuania draws Greece or Israel.
